So, today I’ll keep it simple and just give you a “did you know”.
Did you know that the first jockey to win the very first Kentucky Derby on May 17, 1875 was an African American man, Oliver Lewis. His time of two minutes 37.75 seconds also set an American record over the mile and a half distance (the Kentucky Derby became a 1.25 mile race in 1896). Lewis was one of 13 black jockeys of the 15 jockeys in the field. So there.
It’s really an interesting story. See, the more you know, the more you grow.
